i'm in the same boat as far as age.  it's a mindset to me, but i also believe in setting yourself up for a good life.  it's so finite that i think less about longevity and more about quality.  i hadn't read that article before but i'm doing most of those things at the moment.

as for the pi4s. i stumbled upon so much e-waste that it's hard to justify buying pis at this time. i hope to post pics soon.

my advise will never change.  start simple, take small steps, use failure as a learning tool, document and share.

it reminds me of people who homelab and pull 2,000w just to have high-availability and think that they need enterprise grade gear to host (insert here anything).  meanwhile some of us have a frankenstein lab with laptops and legacy gear that pulls 100w and we are more productive.

too early for a proper screenshot.  this was my previous swarm setup in 2020 which i'm reviving. swarm master and workers communicate over a dedicated mesh and traffic routes to an external vps traffic gateway.  the reverse proxy that handles things is traefik which i've rather customised for my own pursuits.

this method allows me to host swarm anywhere i want be it at home, work, at the coffee shop off a cellular modem

this is a matter we should discuss.  like you, i deal with optical issues.  and that's one of the problems i've had with xfce throughout the years.  bloody hard to customise to where i can see well.  that's another reason why i've been moving towards i3 and exploring other tiling window managers since it's mostly terminal base and i can customise the geometry of my layout and visuals a bit better.

xfce is configurable to an extent, but you really have to dig deep to make it do your bidding.  

gnome to me is not terrible but it seems to be following a similar pattern to macos in that every desktop looks and feels the same and the deep customisation is pulled far away

it's a three-tiered system from my review:
- `tier0:` those of us who want opt-in and have the ability to navigate around systems and build our own
- `tier1:` the people of `r/privacy` who live in some sort of warped spy-novel and throw the kitchen sink at privacy making an utter mess
- `tier2:` the rest of the world.  maybe they're keen on privacy and opting in or out, but they will not let loose of the platforms and other things that feed their stimulation habit

this is why i feel so strongly about creating your own slice of the net.  it may not be massive like centralised platforms, but you can do what you please for the most part.

keep in mind, like all avenues of tech security has it's down sub-disciplines (of which there are many).  i encourage everyone to experiment and find what they're interested in and pursue it.

it started in the 90s, when security was relevant but often overlooked.  it was more a trial-by-fire situation where as a systems operator i had to learn security trappings.  no magic pill for this one.  lots of time, experimentation, failure, and finding a handful of people to bounce ideas off of. this particular field is very lucrative, but if you've followed me at all you'll know money doesn't motivate me.  i'm simply fascinated with solving puzzles :-)

trick with vultr is you have to request outbound email port be opened and justify it.  linode and digitalocean no issues.  

as well, nicety is when your backend mail server is down the first-tier swarm node can spool until your backend comes up.

agnostic of what someone's stance on climate issues are, indeed we are globally seeing warming trends and this is causing shifts all over the globe and it's my personal belief that it's too late to do anything significant about it that would stabilise what we perceive as normal weather conditions.  perhaps i'm a fatalist, who knows. but i've lived in multiple regions of the world and if i look back several decades we had shifts in patterns but nothing as wild as this.

`go run main.go -T "stuff" -e "google" -t "es" -f "en"` does indeed spit out a response from the api, but you'll likely need to build a struct to map the return values to just what you want (ie the text translation for instance).

cisco is mostly trash these days as their focus is a lot of consumer-grade gear which really is not amazing.  they tried to do the whole cloud/sdn thing with meraki but it (much like ubiquiti) is firmware hell and full of exploits that take forever to get patched.

if your group cycles through more gear i'd suggest juniper.  and yes, they can be affordable.

there was a time in my life where i was obsessed with high-density/high-performance computing.  having command of hyperscalar clusters and workstations that could scorch the earth was a deeply embedded part of my work and research years ago.  

over the years i realised that i didn't require access to these sort of things to conduct research and work.  in fact it became quite the antithesis to my philosophical belief system.  in the past my work focused on space-time complexity and performance measured in sub-ms.  when i look back at how much energy was consumed to experiment, my head falls low.

in addition, by becoming dependent on this tier of machinery i created multiple fail points in my toolchain since we designed systems that had an inherent requirement for massive power and scale.

in the end, it felt like having a raptor system to open chrome.

these days i'm quite pleased with my thin/low-power thinkpad i procured for nearly nothing.  funny how things work out as you grow older
