This pandemic is truly a dark time for the world. 2021-08-17T16:23:02Z @ (#) Looks interesting. I’m not as enthusiastic about the hack-ability of my hardware these days, though. I’m also quite fond of macOS. Perhaps Apple has warped my mind. 🤪 2021-08-17T19:13:13Z @ (#) I used to be really into Linux. I didn't understand Apple until I was forced to use a mac for work every day. I think it mostly has to do with the fact that keyboard interactions seem to be more consistent between apps. Linux can get there but it requires more work. And I've had bad experiences with Windows with respect to keyboard interactions. 2021-08-18T00:01:50Z @ @ (#) I think you’re right about some things, but I don’t know how true that is outside of basic text stuff. I really don’t know a ton about emacs. I care about a consistent experience more than I care about specifics. 2021-08-18T00:02:54Z @ (#) perhaps Stockholm syndrome? 2021-08-18T02:21:19Z @ (#) what a wonderful feeling! 2021-08-18T16:19:13Z (#) @ I'm gonna have to check this out. The only way I was able to start landing in people's inboxes was to enable strict DKIM and SPF policies. I had bought the domain a while ago and never set it up. That somebody was trying to use it for spam. Are you hosting your own mail server? 2021-08-18T16:25:55Z @ (#) Also, I found https://mxtoolbox.com/deliverability to be invaluable for diagnosing mis-configurations. 2021-08-20T19:10:33Z @ @ (#) Also, if you’re into self hosting, it’s totally possible to run your own image registry that works with Docker. No need to rely on Docker Hub. Don’t let me nerd snipe you, though. 2021-08-21T02:04:02Z @ @ (#) just curious, what’s stopping you from making it public? 2021-09-02T04:09:04Z Has anyone heard of https://ipfs.io? Basically it’s a giant decentralized file system that has an http interface. I was thinking that it might be an interesting way to self host twtxt.txt from a raspberry pi in my house. I’m wondering if anyone has done this already. 2021-09-02T13:05:09Z @ (#) For sure, I was just wondering if there was any prior work to take it further. IPFS is a decentralized FS. It’s but it is also more, like is a decentralized pubsub. I remember thinking when I first was learning about it that it could probably be used to make a Twitter-like thing. I was busy with other things at the time but seeing twtxt makes me wonder how much of yarnsocial-like functionality could be built using it. 2021-09-02T13:12:38Z @ @ (#) one of the benefits being that you could pretty easily cache your friends’ feeds on your machine(s) making them available to others but people could verify that you haven’t tampered with them. 2021-09-02T14:13:00Z @ (#) oooh those are good to know (extensions and hashing). I’ll definitely keep those things in mind when experimenting. I’m gonna be busy this weekend but I definitely want to explore this more when I get a chance. 2021-09-02T15:17:27Z (#) That's a great idea! As I'm thinking about it more, I remembered that @ has his website on IPFS. It looks like his twtxt.txt is also on IPFS. However, from looking at his profile, it looks like he's also running yarnsocial too. Perhaps, @ has some input? 2021-09-02T15:29:00Z @ @ (#) Thank's for the info, lohn! I was also worried about DNS propagation issues. I was thinking that I could use [this ipns flow](https://docs.ipfs.io/concepts/ipns/) which I think would allow me to keep my DNS records stable. Have you happened to try that approach? 2021-09-07T23:21:35Z (#) I don’t understand the lifetime post limit. 100 seems really low. Even if I were to post something once a week, I still only get a little less than a couple of years out of the account. I don’t understand how that helps me post quality things. I mean I guess if I only posted two or three things a year I could get some longevity out of it, but that seems annoyingly infrequent. I might as well just mail everybody freaking letters at that point. 2021-09-11T10:17:36Z (#) @ @ @ I guess I missed that it was an art project. In that case, 100 posts seems less crazy since said person probably doesn’t want to actually host the next Twitter. 2021-09-12T01:09:32Z (#) @ I don’t find it odd. I find it sad though. 2021-09-12T01:53:41Z @ @ @ (#) I was here before the hacker news influx. I first heard about this from a scuttlebutt user (don’t remember who). They linked to their twtxt.txt from their profile and down the rabbithole I went. 2021-09-12T02:02:05Z @ @ @ (#) I think one thing that keeps bringing me back is the fact that this is such a simple protocol/format. I feel like it could easily capture the imaginations of many devs. I think one of the problems with other decentralized/distributed social networks is that they are built on tech that might seem impenetrable to your average dev. 2021-09-12T03:14:50Z (#) @ (#) I agree the underlying web infra is definitely decentralized. However, I think we can agree that there is a trend towards centralization for services built on top of that decentralized infra. I’m okay with someone else hosting stuff for me as long as I control my data—meaning I “pack up and move” somewhere else without much effort. I think this type of web would make most of the Twitter/Facebook controversy moot. I think it could actually result in a more fairly moderated web as well. 2021-09-12T03:24:46Z @ @ @ (#) scuttlebutt is kinda neat in that it really embraces the idea that people own their data. The source of truth for your posts is your local computer but you don’t have to be online for other people to see your posts. It’s also got PMs and some nice security features. 2021-09-12T03:34:45Z @ @ @ (#) However, scuttlebutt uses a ton of crypto in its protocols and formats which means a scuttlebutt client is not a trivial thing. Its specific formats also unnecessarily complicate making a robust implementation. In addition, you sort of rehost all of your friend’s feeds on your local machine which can get expensive and be can be an onboarding barrier. 2021-09-12T03:47:48Z @ (#) Oh that’s awesome! Let me know when you launch (or if you already have)! I definitely am like minded in that I think there are entrepreneurial opportunities in this space. I think you may be further than me—as I’m still looking. 2021-09-13T01:36:48Z (#) @ (#) its_happening.gif 2021-09-13T01:56:03Z (#<7nz7j3a https://twtxt.net/search?tag=7nz7j3a>) @ I’ve seen you talk about it on here. I haven’t checked it out myself, yet. I’ve heard you talking about maybe releasing a Mac version at some point. If I check it out before that happens, is a Docker container might be the best way to try it on Mac? 2021-09-13T02:00:25Z (#) @ I just had a really weird mind picture of a crab-like human. Maybe something like this ![crab-like human picture](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/f6/83/36/f68336f0a4e734893cc2c6b1461b2f9c.jpg)? 2021-09-13T22:15:12Z (#<3ll4fja https://twtxt.net/search?tag=3ll4fja>) I feel like most feeds I would want to subscribe to are updated pretty infrequently so once a day would be sufficient. But I’ve seen other feeds that are updated more frequently. Perhaps some sort of heuristic based off the feed itself? (For example, average time between entries with a max of 1 day.) If you combined that with a feature to manually trigger a feed recrawl, that might be good enough. 2021-09-14T00:28:23Z (#) Woot! 2021-09-14T00:33:58Z (#<25invba https://twtxt.net/search?tag=25invba>) Thanks! I’ll definitely check it out when I get a chance. Fussy baby makes my time less plentiful as of late. 2021-09-14T18:58:33Z (#) @ @movq @ IIRC, the story around rust async was a good example of letting things mature in libraries. They added macros for the keywords but then delegated the implementations to the ecosystem and then formalized stuff with proper language keywords and interfaces when stuff settled. I believe C++ has a similar model in that stuff tends to bake in boost before entering into the standard library. 2021-09-15T15:30:18Z (#) @ I totally agree. If I ever make a programming language, I really want to find a way to make removing features a regular part of the process. Rust definitely feels like it’s heading in the direction of complexity. However, I did see a ray of hope in a recent talk from rust conf. One of the co-leads for the language suggested removing features. 2021-09-15T15:44:22Z (#) @ As an aside, this is one thing I admire about Haskell. Its “core” language (sort of like an IR) can fit on a note card. I believe that someone fit it in a tweet. Haskell syntax and type system is more complex though. See this talk by FP God-king Simon Peyton Jones for more about that: https://youtu.be/uR_VzYxvbxg 2021-09-16T03:44:04Z (#) @ @ tiny bit facetious but not entirely inaccurate. 😂 2021-09-17T15:50:01Z (#<5p7t4xq https://twtxt.net/search?tag=5p7t4xq>) @ Don’t ya know? Dark web just means anything the governments can’t track your every move with. 😉 2021-09-17T15:57:22Z (#) @ While I think some parts of the FP (and Haskell especially) community can get into abstraction for the sake of abstraction. They do have some cool ideas. I think this is one of them. 2021-09-19T13:03:39Z (#<5p7t4xq https://twtxt.net/search?tag=5p7t4xq>) @ @ I heard another piece of advice. Don’t pay attention to the news very much. Learn history instead. Then occasionally look at the news for its own larger trends (multi-year narratives). And sadly this “conversation” around privacy is all too consistent with some historical trends and it certainly has been a background narrative for almost a decade—it’s not very entertaining. 2021-09-19T13:09:18Z (#) @ haha what do you think? 2021-09-29T12:39:45Z (#) @ I mean it’d be cooler if fintech was about high tech for finned creatures like dolphins and whales. 😂 2021-09-29T12:44:19Z (#) @ @ You might have already seen this but [local-first software](https://www.inkandswitch.com/local-first.html) seems related. 2022-09-20T14:54:36Z (#ahfxeyq) @ I’m not sure if this is a joke or real. Either way, I kinda want one. 😂 2022-09-20T20:38:51Z (#coyqx5a) I use bothdaily. But as my primary? Apple. 2022-09-21T14:29:36Z (#sfw7u3a) @ thanks! 2022-09-21T14:42:57Z (#ahfxeyq) @ I’m in the states. I wonder if they have show rooms here. I found http://www.marscampers.us but it doesn’t look as legit as the site you linked. This is mostly just idle fantasy for now anyways since I’d need a vehicle to tow it first. 2022-09-21T14:50:46Z (#nib34fq) @ Wow I agree that’s terrible. Definitely gonna think twice about using Cloudflare in the future. This is potential lost revenue for any company who uses their services! 2022-09-21T14:54:48Z (#ahfxeyq) @ Good to know. I thought that .us site looked a bit sketchy (at least on mobile). 2022-09-23T04:49:23Z (#ix64jaa) @ I think many projects largely started using it because of [“the standard go project layout”](https://github.com/golang-standards/project-layout) which is not actually endorsed by the go core dev team. I generally advise against it for similar reasons. 2022-09-23T04:54:31Z (#ix64jaa) @ Sometimes it feels like a cultural import from the Java world. I work a lot with Kubernetes code and it feels a bit like a bunch of Java devs wrote it. Good Java devs, but Java devs nonetheless. 2022-09-23T14:20:03Z (#ix64jaa) @ I sometimes wonder if this is a breadth of experience problem. I know I did this a lot when I was first starting out. As I’ve learned more programming languages, I have noticed that I’ve gotten better at following each language’s idioms. 2022-09-25T23:55:29Z (#o34adwa) @ looks like it required alot of hand eye coordination. 2022-09-26T14:28:03Z (#wrw2rvq) @ I don’t know this person. But this reeks of the [Dunning-Kruger effect](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning%E2%80%93Kruger_effect). 2022-09-26T20:44:52Z @ Any plans/thoughts on implementing the [twtxt registry protocol](https://twtxt.readthedocs.io/en/latest/user/registry.html) as part of yarn.social? 2022-09-26T22:21:31Z (#6cajjya) @ That’s why I was thinking it might be easy to implement. I am looking at implementing my own client/server, and it would be nice to have as few protocols as possible to deal with. Now that I’m saying this, I don’t actually know how many people are using twtxt registries vs yarn.social json protocol. 2022-09-26T22:25:32Z (#6cajjya) @ I’d be happy to put in a PR. I wanted to see if this had already been considered and decided against for some reason. 2022-09-26T23:26:31Z (#6cajjya) @ I see registries/search engines as a way of removing the complicated operational piece of twtxt. Just put a static twtxt up on the web and rely on search to notify you of non-follower mentions and to discover others talking about what you care about. 2022-09-26T23:35:29Z (#6cajjya) @ It’s really easy to publish a flat twtxt file from just about any client you can imagine. The hard part is being notified of mentions and discovering new feeds. There is some degree of centralization/always on needed for that piece. By standardizing the hard part to an interchangeable API, it would allow a diversity of clients to be built with little effort. Just plug in your preferred search engine(s) and you’re good to go. 2022-09-26T23:36:47Z (#6cajjya) @ Now that I see your new comment, it sounds like we’re in strong agreement. 2022-09-27T00:12:24Z (#6cajjya) @ that a twtxt search engine is super important and necessary. 2022-09-27T00:29:46Z (#6cajjya) @ so maybe you’re not so sure about the standardized search API then? Or are you saying something else? 2022-09-27T15:23:45Z (#hsouiwa) @ @ I agree that IPv6 would/will be a great thing for decentralization. However, I think folks would like easy to use software regardless of whether it’s centralized or decentralized. I have found a deep lack of care about privacy and rights in general from your average citizen. They just want nice stuff. They don’t care if it means giving away rights/becoming slaves. 2022-09-27T16:15:22Z (#hsouiwa) @ That’s a really good point. Education definitely makes a huge difference. In addition, I think we as technologists have a duty to make the decentralized/rights preserving tech the most appealing. 2022-09-27T17:20:37Z (#hsouiwa) @ I agree with you on all points. I want to clarify that while I think we should build stuff that preserves peoples rights, I’m am strongly opposed to forcing them to use it. It’s entirely possible that what I build might be misguided and actually hurt those ends. It might also just suck. Ultimately, I think people’s free choice should be the decider. 2022-09-28T00:32:24Z @ I'm taking a look at yarn.social search codebase. Just created a tiny PR to add some documentation around setup. I was thinking that I might start with "Document how to use the query language really well" since that would be a good learning exercise. It looks like maybe `https://search.twtxt.net/help` would be a good place to put that work. Were you wanting to put any search help text anywhere else in the UI? 2022-09-28T02:13:26Z (#vkzs7ma) @ Yeah, I figured I’d finally dox myself (my git.mills.io profile). 😉

re memory usage: is there some memory target you’re trying to hit? I would suspect that it partly depends on the data set, but maybe that plus search stats could give me enough to figure out a good set of test data. 2022-09-28T03:01:31Z (#5zfnwmq) @ Sounds like rust has personally offended you. 2022-09-28T03:33:42Z @ Well. All I needed to do was tell my local dev instance to scrape and crawl your feed. The `data` directory is at 231MiB now. 😀 2022-10-04T13:31:04Z lol apparently I’ve been suspended from Reddit due to some violation of content policy. However, they haven’t actually told me what content policy that I have violated. How to get unsuspended? **Prove** that you haven’t violated the content security policy. This is the most asinine thing that I’ve ever seen. 2022-10-04T14:45:08Z (#x3esqjq) @ I can’t say that I’m surprised either. I kinda knew in the back of my mind that it was a matter of time. I don’t exactly hold conventional views on things (Minarchist with AnCap tendencies and a borderline Bitcoin maximalist). I just figured that I’d actually know why I was banned 🤣. Perhaps I’ll find another forum-style site to patronize. 2022-10-04T15:06:33Z (#x3esqjq) @ I suspect this is probably the case. 2022-10-04T18:45:40Z (#x3esqjq) @ looks like it was the “AI said so”. I “got caught in Reddit’s spam filter”. They unbanned me. I get why this happens, but it’s super annoying since my conduct was not even close to bannable. I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. I think I’d prefer to pay a one time fee or a small fee for every post on sites I use a lot rather than them being ad supported and having to put up with overly aggressive spam filters. 2022-10-05T02:56:47Z (#x3esqjq) @ Enough to make garden variety spamming not worth it but not so much that I regular folks can’t afford it. I think a larger one time fee to establish the account (that you don’t get back if you get banned) might be slightly more effective, especially with the current payment rails that exist. 2022-10-05T12:24:02Z (#x3esqjq) @ There are [some folks in podcasting trying to figure it out](https://podcastindex.org/podcast/value4value). People can send podcasters money for every minute of their watch time. It’s voluntary in this context, but I could see this being adapted to a “pay to post” context. These micro transactions probably wouldn’t be feasible with current payment rails. They’re using the lightning network which is a layer 2 protocol on top of bitcoin. Transaction fees can be as low as one ten thousandth of a penny (USD). That makes it feasible to send ridiculously small amounts back and forth between two parties. 2022-10-05T14:20:29Z (#x3esqjq) @ Of all the subs I subscribed to, r/ProgrammingLanguages and r/SelfHosted we’re probably my most frequented. I found that the more niche subreddits tended to have higher quality discussion. 2022-10-05T14:24:32Z (#x3esqjq) @ How do you like lobsters? I’ve heard about it a few times but never actually checked it out. 2022-10-05T15:36:44Z (#x3esqjq) @ Yeah, I've scrolled the front page of lobste.rs a few times. I always left with the impression that it's basically HackerNews but with fewer comments and everyone basically agrees on most things. That's not inherently a bad thing, but I find the sheer volume of perspectives on HackerNews more enjoyable. I feel like I learn about so many interesting extra things from the comments. 2022-10-05T22:32:07Z (#7nvmceq) @ @ I totally get it. I probably would have agreed with you not that long ago. I'm curious what your objections are. 2022-10-06T00:15:06Z (#7nvmceq) @ @ I want to emphasize that I asked that question in good faith. I genuinely want to know what ya'll believe to be true. I don't know everything and maybe you know something that I don't. (In fact, I'd love to know why @ thinks there's been "harm to the economy", but we can save that for later.) I wanted to hear you *first* before I started spouting off about why I think _Bitcoin_ (excluding other crypto currencies) is a net good for society. But since ya'll asked, I'll list them in a fork of this twt. (Not gonna try to prove them off the bat. I'm just gonna list things I believe and we can discuss in forks for each one. In addition, I'm leaving room for the fact that writing these things out might lead me to realize that I'm wrong. I'm happy to admit that I'm wrong. I hope you can go in with the same attitude.) 2022-10-06T00:15:39Z (#6w6e2ka) 1. The inflation we see with fiat currencies (USD, AUD, etc.) is straight up theft. This theft hurts the least advantaged people most. 2022-10-06T00:16:32Z (#6w6e2ka) Debt is slavery. Fiat encourages debt. Therefore, fiat encourages slavery. 2022-10-06T00:18:06Z (#6w6e2ka) Long term, Bitcoin is an appreciating asset. This discourages debt and therefore discourages slavery. 2022-10-06T00:18:26Z (#6w6e2ka) Bitcoin represents the strongest property rights that have ever existed. 2022-10-06T00:19:50Z (#6w6e2ka) I don't buy the "environmental disaster" arguments. In fact, I think the opposite may prove to be true. 2022-10-06T00:22:28Z (#6w6e2ka) If Bitcoin is a ponzi scheme, then ALL money is a ponzi scheme. 2022-10-06T00:23:24Z (#6w6e2ka) Fiat needs coercion/violence to survive. 2022-10-06T00:23:42Z (#6w6e2ka) Bitcoin arose without any need for coercion/violence. 2022-10-06T00:35:24Z (#yqdanjq) [Taxation is theft](https://www.libertarianism.org/columns/is-taxation-theft) and [inflation is a tax that hurts the poor the most](https://engagedscholarship.csuohio.edu/fac_articles/212/). 2022-10-06T00:41:58Z (#6iuqmvq) When someone is in debt, they have promised to pay their creditor back with interest. Basic morality dictates that you pay it back according to the terms of the agreement. However, various decisions could hurt people's ability to continue paying their creditor back. This could, for example, keep someone in a job that they otherwise wouldn't stay in because "it pays well" (a.k.a. it pays enough to pay for their giant monthly debt payment). 2022-10-06T00:44:23Z (#7yh73ia) There will only ever be 21 million Bitcoin (eventually). The yearly inflation rate (new bitcoin created) will drop below gold's inflation rate in the next few years. Eventually, it will go to zero. 2022-10-06T00:47:49Z (#skbye2a) It is trivially easy for a government to steal someone's USD, AUD, etc. It _can be_ harder for a government to steal someone's gold. It _can be_ even harder to steal someone's Bitcoin. In addition, it's nearly impossible for the government to stop me from transferring my Bitcoin to whomever I damn well please. 2022-10-06T00:55:26Z (#vgrvs4a) [Economics is driving Bitcoin to use more renewable sources of energy and seek out energy sources that would be impractical for other uses](https://www.vox.com/2019/6/18/18642645/bitcoin-energy-price-renewable-china). 2022-10-06T00:58:40Z (#jp5cdta) I think I actually mean currency here. A decent definition is "the most marketable thing". Meaning, it's the thing that most people believe to be easily redeemable for the broadest possible set of things. A currency that nobody believes in collapses. So yes, the value is increased by getting more people to believe the thing is valuable—but that's how it works for all currencies. 2022-10-06T01:04:24Z (#xkqdn5q) Every fiat currency has laws that basically make it such that people _have to_ use it—or else. 2022-10-06T02:25:59Z (#gln45sq) @ I think you're probably right. What I think I meant, after some more Googling, is that commodities tend to be valued through the lens of the stock-to-flow model [1](https://materials-risk.com/the-gold-stock-to-flow-model/). And the stock-to-flow model seems to have pretty strong explanatory power for tracking how Bitcoin appreciates [2](https://academy.glassnode.com/indicators/stock-to-flow/stock-to-flow-ratio). I believe that Bitcoin is effectively a commodity and the nature of its stock-to-flow ratio will make it such that it will tend to appreciate over long periods of time. (More stock converging towards a fixed value with an ever shrinking flow \[newly minted bitcoin\].) This is in contrast to fiat money which has been consistently losing value, due to inflation. Thank you. This has shown me that I need to do some more research to understand the distinction better. 2022-10-06T02:28:25Z (#i3uumlq) @ See my comment on abucci's twt: https://twtxt.net/twt/a6n4mtq 2022-10-06T02:30:48Z (#63usx6q) @ I'm not sure what your definition of diluting is here. As I understand it, dilution means that something is losing value, not gaining. 2022-10-06T02:31:38Z (#stzbs2q) @ I would argue that that this is also true for USD, AUD, etc. I think this is more a property of "money" than it is a property of Bitcoin. 2022-10-06T02:32:25Z (#7yh73ia) @ This is a great resource. I like this one as well. 2022-10-06T02:36:26Z (#6iuqmvq) Debt is central to modern central banking and money [1](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3lP3BhvnSo) [2](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYZM58dulPE). I think even your economist neighbor would probably agree. 2022-10-06T02:44:52Z (#skbye2a) @ I think [practice is proving this one](https://www.forbes.com/sites/billybambrough/2018/08/20/bitcoin-believers-speak-out-in-venezuela-as-maduro-makes-historical-devaluation/?sh=475ae5de45ae). In addition, I've heard of reports of folks memorizing their seed phrase, uninstalling their BTC wallet on their phone, crossing the Venezuelan border, proceeding to reinstall it, and restoring access to their wallet using their seed phrase. Try that with Gold or fiat. 2022-10-06T02:55:40Z (#vgrvs4a) @ If I understand your claim correctly, you're saying "I don't like Bitcoin and therefore the amount of energy spent on it is not worth it." Of course, I would never say that you can't feel a certain way about a certain thing. I strongly support your right to feel that way. However, this argument doesn't convince me or prove anything. 2022-10-06T02:59:23Z (#xkqdn5q) It's all taxation. Don't pay your taxes? They take your stuff, lock you in a cage, and/or shoot you. If your store your value in anything other than AUD and it appreciates, you owe income tax on it at some point. This is typically when you "realize the gain". Although, I have heard (never confirmed) that some countries tax unrealized gains in some circumstances. 2022-10-06T03:30:34Z (#kojyd3a) @ I have muted abucci. He's clearly not wanting to interact in a fair or open manner. Clearly, any further conversation with him is a waste of my time. I appreciate your attempts to act in good faith in this conversation. However, you haven't brought any material facts to light that I wasn't already aware of. You haven't directly addressed any of my core arguments. Your previous reply is super condescending ("poor brasshopper@twtxt.net"). And frankly, I find it hilarious that you're the one thinking that I've drank the propaganda kool-aid. You, sir, are the one trapped in Plato's cave. I believe any further discussion to be a waste of both of our time. Don't bother replying. 2022-10-06T04:13:24Z (#kojyd3a) @ I appreciate that you were trying to be civil. I do see that, and I thank you for that. And on second read, that last message might be a bit harsher than I intended. I’m sorry for that. I do think it’s clear to me that we’re not gonna get anywhere having a discussion in this format. I think I’m realizing this is a terrible medium for this sort of discussion. It creates a false urgency, at least for me. Maybe a long form blog post where commenters can reply in an email 1:1 would be better. I think it might allow everyone more time to allow their ideas to “bake” before sending. 2022-10-06T05:04:09Z I didn’t express myself very well earlier when mentioning muting abucci. I muted to stop myself from saying anything regretful (which would be a waste of my time and theirs). Also, I try to make all mutes temporary. 2022-10-06T05:29:30Z (#a5kjj2q) @ This is something I really like about this model. Your twts are still your own. You can at-mention whoever you like however much you like. They just don’t have to listen. Of course, if you’re on someone else’s instance, then it gets a bit more complicated. But at least it’s _possible_ to move to your own. 2022-10-06T07:12:35Z (#a5kjj2q) @ yeah I gotcha. I was saying that ownership of one’s twts are a bit more complicated when they’re one someone else’s instance. The instance owner could, for example, delete the feed of someone who was behaving badly. If they hadn’t backed up their feed, might be game over for all those twts. 2022-10-06T07:58:43Z (#a5kjj2q) @ That’s why I was so excited about search the other day. I was thinking about the possibility of hosting my twtxt on IPFS which would mean effectively hosting it on no machine in particular. (It would change over time and could be multiple at the same time.) However, this would prevent me from knowing my own followers because the request log would be spread out across many nodes which most definitely wouldn’t share their user agent logs with me. That’s not great but perhaps it doesn’t matter. I personally only care about knowing my own followers so that I find people who mention me that I don’t happen to also follow. This is where search/registries would be really valuable. I could just periodically search various indexes/registries for mentions. I feel like this could have a benefit of keeping trolls at a distance. If I only search once an hour and put them in a separate queue, I can handle people outside my circle differently. 2022-10-06T14:59:37Z @ I appreciate you calling out my point on inflation last night. I've learned a lot more about inflation now. I am better for it. My goal last night was to seek truth. And some truth we found. When you say things like ["Cryptocurrency has ruined the brains of so many people"](https://twtxt.net/twt/rhbpiyq) it's difficult for me to see how that's seeking truth. And frankly, I found it infuriating (which is why I muted in order to de-escalate). I don't mind disagreement. It's totally valid for you to feel the way you feel about Bitcoin. While I would prefer if you didn't think my brain was ruined, I am deeply committed to the idea that you have a right to believe what you believe. I'd rather keep an open line of communication (no mutes). However, last night I realized that I really care about this subject. I intend to find a way to keep talking about it. I'd understand if you don't want to follow me or you just want to mute me entirely. 2022-10-06T16:31:37Z (#thqi7sq) @ wow that’s a beast. 😅
