One possible way to use twtxt for private messages would be using http authentication, then it's private to anyone who's allowed to see the twtxt.txt file, otherwise the it returns 401 Unauthorized. That's not exactly an easy solution since both parties need to agree on authentication, and no client is set up for that, but it at least is self-hosted and decentralised :D

@~duriny@envs.net I’ve actually thought about this, and it coudl work but it might be a bit “too simple”. @xuu@txt.sour.is has some ideas around Private Feeds too as well as @fastidious@arrakis.netbros.com – One of the hardest problems of course as you rightly point out is how do agree on and distributed some kind of secret material (be it symmetric or assymetric) – We’ve also toyed briefly with the idea of deferring all that “hard work” on to something like keys.pub
